SuperG day - long day

Up early for a 5:30 breakfast. We also had to check out of the hotel because we were moving to Yongpyong for the tech events.  We left our bags in the race office. I had already over packed and now I have more stuff.

I picked up the racer bibs, the full bag of back up walkie talkies and rode the lift to the start. I have my own backpack - camera but no peanut butter cups here.  My fellow jury member, Nobuhiko carried the radio bag for me.

We have moved down to the SG start so the DH start had already been stripped of equipment.

In the SuperG, the athletes get 75 minutes to inspect the course (one time down) and then they race it.  They come through the start to check out the first couple of gates.

Here is Canada's Dustin Cook - checking out the start gate...

I had a visit from the Alpine Manager, Jon Byun

To get a sense for how they capture the event for TV, this is the equipment I see in the start gate.

This does not include the 3 handheld cameras that roam around the athlete preparation area and that come into the start tent and the 5 microphones installed inside the tent. I speak in muted tones at all times.

As part of each race, the broadcasters have POV racers ski down the course filming and talking - the SuperG was no different. Here the two POV racers (inc Hans Knaus on the left - Olympic Silver in SG at Nagano in '98) discus the pre run plan.

There is always an army of TV production guys near the start - blue bibs is OBS and green bibs are NBC.

At the conclusion of the successful SuperG, I ski down the course  to congratulate the Deputy Chief of Race, Tommy (middle and Nikolai, the Chief of Course.  To say this is an internationally managed event - is an understatement.

I got down to the finish after they had the venue awards ceremony - not many folks in the stands.

We all convened in the IF Lounge and had lunch and we all watched the second run of the ladies event going on at Yongpyong.

We than said our goodbyes to the helpful workforce staff that supported us in the Jury room and IF lounge and packed our gear in three vehicles for the 30 minute drive to Yongpyong.

The vehicles that brought us to Yongpyong then brought the ladies events jury back to Jeongseon for their speed events. The venue swap went very smoothly.

B,
