Since the weather has been a very newsworthy item of the alpine events, here is the link to a pretty detailed forecast for all the venues but especially the Jeongseon speed venue.
You can follow along with ‘guess which day we are going to race’. Here is what was happening at the finish line banner system...
Then 30 seconds later, they were hanging vertically......and the finish area is the most protected part of the course. The gusts come from different directions and the change in strength is unbelievable.
My Russian start crew call it the Dancing Winds. Very appropriate.
The gondola cars were removed again today to avoid any damage to high winds and all movement above the slalom course (for the Alpine Combined) was by cat or snowmobile - they were kept busy all day hauling course crews and racers training for SuperG.
There was 2 ft of snow drift along several net lines. Shovels and snowblowers were kept busy - made more challenging because where ever you pushed it or blew the snow, it flew right back.
I did however find the data source of our weather reports as the meteorological station was near the base area...
Managing the high gusts causes delays and cancellations - especially on a course that has 4 major jumps and athletes running at 130 kmh. The wind challenges aren't just affecting the Jeongseon speed venue but also the Yongpyong tech venue where the ladies are scheduled for GS & Slalom.
We still have time in the schedule to manage all the events so for now we wait......but there is a bit of stress in the system.
B.
